Innovative Tool to Overcome Social Learning Challenges

Southeast Psych Calls The Social Express Innovative ToolSouthEast Psych is a psychology practice located in Charlotte, North Carolina. (That’s also where our president Jon Cornick is based.) The SouthEast Psych team is a great group of people. They’re really focused on giving their clients a top-notch experience.

Here’s how they make that happen, from their website:

Southeast Psych is one of the largest and most-respected psychology practices in the region. We got that way by hiring top-notch clinical and support staff and investing heavily in the practice. When you visit either location, you’ll notice books, coffee, tremendous hospitality, and even an unexpected sense of fun. We want our clients to have a special experience from the time they walk in the door until the moment they leave.

SouthEast Psych reviewed our social learning software and gave us high marks! Thanks so much to Becky Thompson at SouthEast Psych for this review.

Here is their wonderful review.

The Social Express: An Innovative Tool for Overcoming Social Learning Challenges

Just like IQs, we each have a unique EQ, or emotional intelligence quotient.  However, in the same way that IQs can be developed over time, EQs can be built through explicit learning and practice, as well.  Especially for our kids with social learning challenges, it is essential to provide opportunities for emotional intelligence growth.
One of the most innovative tools we’ve seen recently is

Speech Language Pathologist Recommends New Social Learning Software

We were so honored that our social learning software has been recommended by another Speech Language Pathologist!  Angela Desideri, M.S.,CCC-SLP finds that The Social Express helps some of her students with perspective taking skills, among other improvements. Here is more of our interview with Angela Desideri.

San Diego-CA (PRWEB) August 30, 2012

Angela Desideri, a Speech-Language Pathologist, calls The Social Express (TM) an essential social learning software program that can be a useful tool for many teachers and SLP’s.

The Social Express is an interactive social skills learning program, which consists of 16 lessons and 30 interactive scenes. Developed for children between five and 12 years, the software is based on best practices and programs that feature cognitive behavioral techniques and visual strategies. The lessons adhere to California State Board of Education Content Standards and the Common Core Standards.

The program uses video modeling, socially valid dialog, original characters, and Hollywood-movie quality animation. Children with autism, ADHD, Asperger’s and other social-emotional deficits find the characters engaging and many ask to use it everyday.

Angela Desideri uses The Social Express on an iPad with some of her students diagnosed with high functioning autism, Asperger’s, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and with those who have social language deficits.

When asked to describe the progress she’s seen in her students after using The Social Express, Desideri explained four

Seven Tips for Using iPads with Kids with Autism (and My Favorite Learning Programs)

The Social Express Guest Post for iLearn ProjectHere is a recent guest post I wrote about using iPads to help kids with autism. It was published at ilearnproject.com Here is how the iLearn Project describes itself from their website:

The iLearn Project exists to equip families, educators, and school leaders to innovate using 21st century digital learning. We’re here to make your life easier by compiling and producing the latest research and tools. We’re not affiliated with any curriculum, software, or hardware providers. Our vision is to see Washington state lead the country in high test scores and low costs as a result of online and blended learning. The iLearn Project is a project of the Freedom Foundation.

Like many parents and educators we’re sold on the iPad as a learning tool. My wife and I believe that it’s hard to beat the iPad for learning programs for our sons with autism.

Our twin sons, diagnosed on the spectrum at the age of three, are 10 years old now and in mainstream classes. It was a long road to arrive here. When my wife and I successfully navigated the public school system and got them into mainstream kindergarten, we were so glad.
Then, we quickly realized that the boys were both suffering from major social- emotional skill deficits. They weren’t interacting at all with the other kids in their new mainstream class. We knew that we had more work to do to help them to develop social skills.

About the same time, a big ‘aha’
