Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (CASEL).

The Importance of Social Learning

Our world is a social place, and we spend most of our time as members of social groups. We all use our social skills everywhere we go. Social skills are about sharing space with others and being able to get along with people in a variety of settings. An individual’s social success is based upon the quality of his or her social interactions. In order to have positive social interactions, an individual needs to be socially competent and have strong social learning skills.

Understanding Perspectives

In order to figure out what we will say or do, we must consider our own perspective and other individuals’ perspectives in each and every new social situation. It is important to think about everyone’s perspectives and feelings as we interact socially.

Strengthening Social Skills

Children and young adults often get lost in a maze of social understanding; they may have learned some social skills and still be unsuccessful socially. It is important to show how people think and which social behaviors (hidden rules) are appropriate situationally.

Creating Stronger Social Relationships

Social skills are the building blocks of meaningful interactions. Figuring out situations with your eyes, taking turns talking, and awareness of how behavior affects relationships all help strengthen social relationships.

Social Competence Makes Everything Better

Social competence in the classroom has been linked with positive intellectual outcomes. Competencies include self awareness, social awareness, self management, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

Benefits of Social Learning

Equipping children and young adults and enabling them to acquire appropriate social interaction competencies requires direct instruction, with each facet of every skill broken down into small pieces.

The Social Express programs address areas of need by providing a highly interactive and visual presentation and utilizing an additional component which allows for the generalization of skills outside of the teaching environment.

Help your children and students maximize their social potential and see what other postive benefits follow.
